[MALATRA’ PROJECT] First test campaign in glacier environment
October 23, 2013 in News
Friday, October 18th, a firts series of test were performend in order to verify the communication between the sensor designed to measure the physical properties of the ice.
The sensor were dropped at various depths and interrogated from the surface withe the reader (a portable device able to read the tags measurements and measure their displacement).
The test was made at Punta Helbronner, of Courmayeur (Aosta Valley, Italy), at an altitude of about 3400 meters above sea level on the glacier Colle del Gigante near the border with the French territory.
The tags have been inserted inside the ice to a depth of about 6 meters using steam probe which allows to perform the holes in the glacier.
Both the tags and the reader worked very well. It was possible to identify the sensor position at a great distance!
